18 February 2009
Undergraduate Award Winners announced

Our judges chose the following entries for recognition:

  • Prose: Matthew Pizza, "The Twilight Lake"
    • "Taut and strong, the writing of Matthew Pizza stands out for its simplicity. Those who swear by Hemingway's ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ will connect with this piece because it's the same tale in miniature. ‘Twilight Lake’ demonstrates the value of restraint, significance, and clarity, a trio of qualities more young writers would do well to champion in their writing along with voice and conflict, which they often seem to overvalue."
  • Poetry: Lucian Young, "Play"
    • "When dealing with the intricacies of the human condition, this poet skillfully side-steps the overstated and the self-indulgent. The scope here is dead-on: a snapshot, a quiet bit of life, written in language that is clear, honest, and, above all, graceful."

Congratulations to the winners of our Undergraduate Awards! Their stories will appear in the Spring 2009 issue of BER.

Sixth Annual Flash Fiction Contest Winners announced

Our sixth annual Flash Fiction contest pulled in several quality submissions, making it tough to pick a winner. Judge Thomas Maltman (The Night Birds, Soho Press, 2007) chose the following entries for recognition:

  • 1st place: John Olseth, "Frostbite"
    • "The vivid imagery in this piece seared my consciousness, so I went on seeing it after I set it down. I love how the writer invokes a moment in time, even if that moment has a casual brutality true to rural life. The ending allows the story to lift and touch on universals."
  • 2nd place: Alicia Shandra Holmes, "Winter Afterward"
    • "Certain stories stay with families for more than a generation. In under five hundred words, the writer transports us to Detroit in 1970, and the story has a chill you feel down in your bones when you are done."
  • 3rd place: Irene Westcott, "Not One Word"
    • "A haunting, horrifying little story. Part of what good stories do is shake you at the core and this one left me troubled."

Congratulations to the winners of our sixth annual Flash Fiction Contest! Their stories will appear in the Spring 2009 issue of BER.

BER announces partnership with Barnes & Noble at Minnesota State, Mankato

In response to Blue Earth Review’s loss of MSSA funding, Minnesota State, Mankato’s campus Barnes & Noble location has offered to become one of our primary sponsors. This marks the first time any incarnation of the literary magazine at MSU has partnered with the national bookseller chain. We're very excited to have the opportunity to work with the campus bookstore, as this provides unique, new opportunities for us. Keep watch here for upcoming collaborations between the two.
